DVD Styler Review – Is It Any Good? – VHS CONVERTERS

Does the output dvd video quality depend on the input video format of the clips used to make the dvd? One thing I have noticed is that when MP4 clips are used, the output video when shown in the “Preview” are slightly blurred.

More noticeable in the text where the sharpness of the letters are reduced. If so, what is the best input file format to use to get the best output quality? So far I have used AC3 one highlighted by default and the output dvd volume of the clips seems to be less than the original clip when both played on computer. How should I choose which one to use to get the best quality? The output quality depends on the quality of the input clip.

It should not have anything to do with the container format of the input clip. Since converting to DVD is using a lossy compression format, the resulting DVD will always have a lower quality than the input. If this degradation is visible depends on the encoder settings and on the characteristics of the input.

Example: If your input clip has a low bitrate and a low frame size, then you will probably not see any degradation. But if your input is a HD quality clip maybe taken from a BluRay you will certainly see a degradation because the allowed frame size and bitrate for DVD are much lower. PCM is uncompressed so it takes up a lot of space. It is mostly used for music videos where the highest audio quality is needed. AC3 will give you higher quality at the same bitrate, or you can get comparable quality at a lower bitrate.

The output volume depends on the decoder which your software player uses. In DVDStyler you have an option to normalize the audio which can bring up the volume. But be careful.

This option uses the ReplayGain algorithm and it has no protection against clipping. For NTSC this is not allowed. MP2 can only be used if another audio format like AC3 is also present. In that case, is it possible to change some setting in DVDStyler encoding to get maximum quality possible? If so, how? I’ve attached details taken using Mediainfo of 4 clips. They are actually the same video, but I had to convert them to other formats due to some issues that came up, which I’d be happy if you could please sort out.

Video 1 – original output file from Windows live movie maker. No video is played in the output both computer and DVD player.

Any particular reason? Video 2 – because the above didn’t work, I converted them to this type. Though they are still. Only about 3 frames are played per 2 seconds like a photo slideshow. Video 3 – I converted again to MP4. They play normally thumbnail and output video but it was then that I noticed the reduction in the quality which is the reason for my original question about video quality , and I also converted to.

I think you can get an idea from the details in the attachment most of which I don’t understand as to what went wrong and shed some light on the above issues, and hopefully tell me which one is the best to use. DVDStyler does not let you change the encoder settings. It uses Constant Bitrate mode, and this only gives you good quality for high video bitrates of kbps and above.

For medium and low bitrates the output quality of DVDStyler is not that good. Your original file from Windows live movie maker is very high quality. It has a video bitrate of kbps while all your converted versions only have a bitrate of around kbps. No wonder you got visibly reduced quality.

The converted file had the problem as described in my last post for Video 2 video thumbnail issue. From what you have mentioned above It uses Constant Bitrate mode, and this only gives you good quality for high video bitrates of kbps and above it seems that if the original file types are made to work somehow, that would give a high quality output in the dvd.

I used your two files Video-original. The button for Video-original. The button for Video-converted. I also had a look at the files you have uploaded, and my conclusion is that Microsoft live movie maker creates broken files.

I used the video-original. It did play in VLC though which is based on libav decoders. I believe that Microsoft is wrong here Thanks a lot for the trouble you two have taken to sort out my problem. Glad to know that there is a way to make it work at last. I would like to clarify some practical and technical points regarding some things mentioned above. I am not familiar with technical things on these issues so bear with me on this one please.

Is it correct to say that, to get the mkv file, I first add the original wmv file among the other avi files created from other video editors , then enter the command JMJ has mentioned, and dvdstyler will convert remux it to the mkv file during encoding and use that mkv file for the final output dvd instead of the original wmv file?

Where should I enter the command? Since there are several about 10 wmv files, i believe I have to give the command to each file. Since the file names are different, how should the command be written for the seperate files?

For eg. If the original file name is ABC. Tried a basic repair with AsfTools. Fixed the problem is it that the original wmv file is ‘repaired’ using Asftools and then the repaired wmv file is used in dvdstyler instead of the mkv file convertion mentioned above? It might look childish to ask all these but I haven’t gone this far in dvd making, so I need some guidance. Actually out of the video editors i have, WLMM has nice transitions for text, headers and captions, and when saved as ‘for high definition display’ , the output file has much better quality than the avi files created from my other video editors.

Attached I use Windows 8 – I believe it”s the same for Windows 7. This will make a new mkv file for your wmv files,eg Video-original. You open your wmv files or drag-drop. On the left is a button “Basic repair” Attached that will create a new file like eg for Video-original.

The remuxing to. Then the resulting. You can do this with a batch file which invokes the command for each. Save this under the file name “Remux2MKV. Run the batch file by double-clicking it.

As a result you will get a file “ABC. If you are not comfortable with the command line or with batch files this might be the best solution for you. Thanks a lot for the detailed guide you two have provided. I’ll get on with it and let you know.

Remuxing to. Thanks a lot for your step by step guides and all the help. Without them I could have never done this. Oh no! Some styles failed to load. Help Create Join Login. Application Development. IT Management. Project Management. Resources Blog Articles. Menu Help Create Join Login.
